Running of the Bulls Festival – Media release August 2011 - Bronwyn Meads
The bullish plans are all coming together and there is growing excitement out there for the Running of the Bulls relay. Friends, family, work colleagues, businesses, community groups and sports clubs are organising their teams now to run in the 4 lane rugby obstacle course up the main street in Bulls.
Manawatu Turbos have confirmed they will be sending a team of 4 for a feature race and we have put the challenge out to the Airforce to compete against them. We are looking for 3 teams and this will be the first race of the day. It is sure to be a great spectacle to see who wins.
We are most excited to be hosting Bull Allen ex Allblack in our town again who will be performing the MC duties for the day.
For those wanting to register a team, the forms are available from Bronwyn Meads Festival Event Manager by picking one up at the Bulls Information Centre 113 Bridge Street Bulls, or emailing her at [email protected]. It is free to register and there are 4 sections. Children under 12, Open Women’s, Open Men’s, and Open Mixed. We want you to come up with your own team name using the town’s A-Bull brand. For example one team has named themselves Kick-a-bull.
Recently Ms Meads met with Managers of CMP Rangitikei and she is thrilled that they have come on board as a Naming Rights sponsor. CMP Rangitikei are a big employer in our district and are very community focused and are sure that many of their staff will join in the festivities. This is a positive association for both. The Real NZ Festival is the other major sponsor of this event.
And kids we have confirmed Ronald McDonald will be part of the parade and will be there to follow for a few hours to chat with you. There will be prizes galore on the day, for best float, the fastest milk skuller, moody cow and grumpy bull competition, best calf and lamb decorated in your favourite rugby team colours, best rugby supporter rugby supporter colours eg Taranaki, Manawatu, Super 15 Bulls, Hurricanes, Allblacks, England, Wales etc. Prizes donated by Bulls Lions. The animals will be part of the parade through the main street.
Bulls has adopted South Africa for the Rugby World Cup, due to the Super 15 Bulls rugby team. Marton Rotary will be providing the South African Barbecue and there will also be wine, beer and non alcoholic beverages on sale.
Our big wooden bull has been painted in the all the jerseys competing in the Rugby World Cup and South Africa colours are painted on one of the bulls legs.
The wooden bull can be seen on State Highway 1 and the interest from passerbys already is huge and the cup hasn’t even started.
African Drumming and IPC Drum team will both be performing. The curtain side will be set up at one end of the main street and performances and activities will be intermittent throughout the festival. The running of the bulls race starts at approximately 1pm.
Milk Skulling, have you got what it takes to be the Fastest Milk Skuller in NZ at The Only Place You Can Get Milk From Bulls! Come along and try. Prizes to be won!!
Following the festival the Red Checkers RNZAF flying team, will be performing a display at the Domain. This is your chance to get up close and enjoy a free display in our own town. Whittakers Chocolates donated 600 bars and these will be thrown out as a lolly scramble at the domain to follow the display, together with some other free giveaways for the kids.
A mechanical bull will be operating as well, so it’s going to be great day. The Girl Guides are confirmed to sing the national anthem of South Africa and Clifton Primary School will be singing the NZ anthem.
